What it does
The wheel bearing lets the hub spin freely on the axle while carrying the vehicle load and cornering forces. It is sealed and packed with grease, so failure follows once water or dust breaches the seal.
Signs it needs replacing
- A humming or growling noise that rises with speed
- Noise that changes pitch when you steer left or right
- Play felt when rocking the wheel top to bottom
- ABS warning light on some vehicles

FAQ
How can I tell which side the bearing is on?
Gentle S-turns at moderate speed load each side in turn. If the noise grows when you steer right, the load has shifted to the left wheel, so the left bearing is the likely culprit — and the reverse for a left turn.
Can I keep driving on a noisy wheel bearing?
Briefly and gently, to reach a workshop. A bearing that has begun to growl is deteriorating, and in the worst case it can seize or allow the hub to break away from the axle at speed.
