What it does
The control arm connects the wheel hub to the chassis and sets the wheel path as the suspension moves. It pivots on bushings at the chassis end and a ball joint at the wheel end, and both are wear points.
Signs it needs replacing
- Clunking from a front corner over bumps
- Steering wheel vibration at speed
- Uneven tyre wear on the inner or outer shoulder
- Alignment that will not hold after adjustment

FAQ
Can just the bushings be replaced?
Sometimes, if the arm and ball joint are sound and pressed bushings are available separately. Many modern arms come as a sealed assembly, where replacing the complete arm is cheaper than the labour to press new bushings in.
Is a worn control arm dangerous?
Worn bushings mainly cause noise and alignment drift, but a failing ball joint at the outer end can separate and let the wheel collapse outward. Any knocking from a front corner deserves prompt inspection.
