What it does
The steering rack converts the rotation of the steering wheel into side-to-side movement at the tie rods. On hydraulic systems it also houses the valve that directs assist pressure to either side.
Signs it needs replacing
- Fluid leaking from the rack boots at either end
- Play in the steering with no response for a few degrees
- Clunking when turning at low speed
- Uneven assist — light one way, heavy the other

FAQ
What does uneven power assist mean?
It almost always points to internal wear in the rack valve rather than the pump, because a failing pump loses assist in both directions equally. Assist that works turning left but not right is a rack symptom.
Is a leaking rack boot serious?
The boot itself is inexpensive, but once torn it lets dust and moisture reach the rack seals and inner tie rods. A torn boot left alone is a common path to needing the whole rack.
