What it does
A strut combines the shock absorber and a structural suspension member in one assembly, carrying the coil spring and locating the wheel. Because it is structural, a failed strut affects steering geometry as well as ride.
Signs it needs replacing
- Knocking or clunking over bumps
- Steering feeling vague or wandering
- Uneven tyre wear and repeated alignment drift
- Visible fluid leaking from the strut body

FAQ
What is the difference between a shock and a strut?
A shock only damps. A strut damps and also forms part of the suspension structure that holds the wheel in position. That is why replacing a strut normally requires a wheel alignment afterwards.
Should I fit a complete strut assembly or just the cartridge?
A complete assembly includes the spring and top mount, is quicker to fit and requires no spring compressor. It costs more up front but replaces the mount and bearing, which are usually worn by the same mileage anyway.
