What it does
A ball joint is the pivoting connection between the control arm and the steering knuckle, allowing the wheel to steer and move vertically at the same time. It carries load continuously and relies on a sealed grease boot.

FAQ
What happens if a ball joint fails completely?
The joint separates and the wheel folds under the car. It is one of the few suspension failures that can cause immediate loss of control, which is why knocking noises from the front should never be postponed.
How long do ball joints last?
Often over 150,000 km, but the deciding factor is boot integrity. Once the boot tears, grease escapes and dust gets in, and the joint can then wear out within months regardless of its age.
