Why do coil springs break?
Corrosion pitting starts a stress crack, usually near the bottom coil where water and grit collect. Repeated heavy loading and bad roads accelerate it, which is why potholed routes take a visible toll.
Do springs need to be replaced in pairs?
Yes. A new spring sits at full height while the old one on the other side has settled, giving the car a lean and uneven handling. Replace them per axle to keep the ride height even.
