What it does
The power steering pump pressurises hydraulic fluid so the steering rack can turn the wheels with modest effort at the wheel. It is belt-driven from the engine and runs continuously whenever the engine is on.
Signs it needs replacing
- A whine that rises as you turn the wheel
- Steering that goes heavy, especially when parking
- Fluid level dropping or dark burnt-smelling fluid
- Groaning at full lock

FAQ
Why is my steering heavy only when cold?
Cold fluid is thicker and a worn pump struggles to build pressure until it warms. Heaviness that eases after a few minutes usually signals a pump losing capacity rather than a leak.
Can low fluid damage the pump?
Yes. Running low draws air into the system, and the pump cavitates — it churns air instead of fluid, which causes rapid internal wear. Persistent whining plus a low reservoir needs attention before the pump is ruined.
