What it does

The cooling fan pulls air through the radiator when there is not enough natural airflow — in traffic, at idle, or with the AC running. Most modern cars use an electric fan controlled by a temperature sensor.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Overheating in traffic but normal temperature at speed
  • Fan never audibly switches on when the engine is hot
  • AC cooling poorly at a standstill
  • Fan running constantly, even on a cold engine

FAQ

Is it the fan or the radiator?

If the car runs cool on the highway and only overheats when stationary, airflow is the issue and the fan is the prime suspect. A blocked radiator normally causes overheating at all speeds, not just at rest.

Why would the fan run all the time?

Usually a failed temperature sensor or a relay stuck closed, which makes the control circuit default to permanently on. It is not immediately harmful, but it drains the alternator and wears the fan motor prematurely.
