What it does
The radiator transfers engine heat to the passing air through a finned core. Its capacity sets the ceiling on how much heat the cooling system can shed, which matters most in slow traffic on a hot day.

FAQ
Why does it overheat in traffic but not on the highway?
At speed, airflow through the core does the work. In traffic the electric fan has to supply it — so overheating only when stationary usually points to the fan, its relay or the fan clutch rather than the radiator itself.
Can a leaking radiator be repaired?
Small end-tank seepage can sometimes be resealed, but plastic tanks become brittle with age and typically fail again nearby. On a car with an original radiator past ten years, replacement is usually the sounder choice.
