What it does
The water pump circulates coolant between the engine and radiator, driven by the timing belt, an auxiliary belt or the timing chain. Without circulation, coolant in the block boils while the radiator stays cool.
Signs it needs replacing
- Coolant leak from a weep hole near the pump
- A whining or grinding noise that changes with engine speed
- Overheating with a full coolant reservoir
- Play or wobble in the pump pulley by hand

FAQ
How long does a water pump last?
Commonly 100,000–150,000 km. If it is driven by the timing belt, it is usually replaced with the belt regardless of condition, because the labour to reach it dominates the cost of the part.
What is the weep hole for?
It is a deliberate drain that lets coolant escape visibly once the internal seal starts to fail, rather than leaking into the bearing. Coolant dripping from it is a designed early warning, not a defect.
