What it does
Coolant is a water and glycol mixture that raises the boiling point, lowers the freezing point and carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the radiator, block and heater core from internal rust.
Signs it needs replacing
- Coolant that looks rusty, brown or has debris floating in it

FAQ
Can I just top up with water?
Only as an emergency measure to reach a workshop. Water alone has no corrosion inhibitors and a lower boiling point, so prolonged use causes internal rust and scale that eventually blocks the radiator and heater core.
Do coolant colours matter?
Colour indicates the additive chemistry, not a universal standard. Mixing incompatible types can gel the mixture and destroy its protective properties, so match the specification in the owner manual rather than the colour on the shelf.
