What it does
The thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve that blocks flow to the radiator until the engine reaches operating temperature, then opens to regulate it. It is what lets an engine warm up quickly and then stay stable.

What happens if the thermostat is stuck open?
The engine runs permanently cold. That hurts fuel economy, causes weak cabin heat, and over time increases wear because the oil never reaches its designed operating temperature.
Is a thermostat worth replacing preventively?
It is inexpensive and failure is abrupt — a stuck-closed thermostat can overheat an engine badly within minutes. Many workshops replace it as a matter of course whenever the cooling system is drained.
