What it does

Brake pads are the friction blocks the caliper squeezes against the brake disc to slow the car. They are a wear item on every vehicle and the single most commonly replaced brake component.

Signs it needs replacing

  • A high-pitched squeal that stops when you press the pedal
  • Grinding or a metal-on-metal sound
  • The pedal travels further before biting
  • Visible pad thickness under 3 mm

FAQ

How long do brake pads last?

Typically 40,000–70,000 km, but city driving in Amman with constant stop-start on inclines wears them considerably faster than highway use. Inspect them at every oil change.

Should front and rear pads be replaced together?

Replace them in axle pairs — both front or both rear — so braking stays balanced. Front pads usually wear roughly twice as fast as rear, so they rarely need replacing at the same time as each other.
