What it does
Brake discs (rotors) are the metal plates that spin with the wheel and give the pads a surface to grip. They wear down in thickness over time and can warp from repeated heat cycling.
Signs it needs replacing
- Steering wheel vibration under braking
- Pulsing felt through the brake pedal
- A visible lip around the outer edge of the disc
- Deep scoring or blue heat discolouration

FAQ
Can brake discs be resurfaced instead of replaced?
Only if they remain above the minimum thickness stamped on the disc hub after machining. Modern discs are made thin to save weight, so replacement is often the safer and more economical choice.
Why does my steering wheel shake when I brake?
That is almost always disc runout — the disc is no longer perfectly flat, usually from heat. It shows up under braking specifically because the pads are tracking the uneven surface.
