How do I know if it is the master cylinder or just air in the lines?
Air gives a spongy pedal that firms up after bleeding. A failing master cylinder gives a pedal that sinks slowly while you hold steady pressure at a stop — bleeding will not fix that.
Does a failing master cylinder always leak visibly?
No. Most failures are internal, where the seals let fluid bypass inside the cylinder. The reservoir level drops with nothing to see on the ground, which is why the sinking-pedal test matters.
