What it does
The caliper is the hydraulic clamp that houses the pads and presses them onto the disc. It slides on guide pins, and when those pins or the piston seize, braking becomes uneven.

What causes a brake caliper to seize?
Corrosion on the slide pins or a torn piston boot letting moisture in. Dust and road salt accelerate it, and a caliper that sits unused — on a spare or seldom-driven car — is especially prone.
Can I drive with a sticking caliper?
Not safely. A caliper that will not release drags the pad continuously, which overheats the disc, ruins the pads quickly and can boil the brake fluid, causing a soft pedal or total loss of braking.
