What it does
The windscreen is laminated safety glass bonded to the body, and it is structural — it contributes to roof crush resistance and provides the backstop the passenger airbag deploys against.
Signs it needs replacing
- A chip or star crack from a stone strike
- A crack spreading across the glass
- Pitting that scatters light when driving at night
- Wiper judder from a rough or contaminated surface

FAQ
Should a chip be repaired or the glass replaced?
Chips smaller than a coin and outside the driver line of sight can usually be resin-repaired, which stops them spreading. Once a crack extends past a few centimetres or reaches the edge, replacement is the only safe option.
Why do small chips suddenly become long cracks?
Thermal shock. A cold windscreen hit with hot air from the demister, or a hot one hit with cold water at a car wash, expands the glass unevenly and runs the crack across in seconds. Repair chips before a temperature swing does it for you.
