What it does
The side mirror assembly holds the glass, its adjustment motors and often indicator repeaters, heating elements and blind-spot sensors. On most modern cars it also folds electrically.

FAQ
Can just the mirror glass be replaced?
Usually yes, and it is far cheaper than the whole assembly. The glass clips onto a backing plate, though heated glass and blind-spot indicators need the correct part and connector for that specific vehicle.
Why does my mirror vibrate at speed?
Normally a worn or damaged folding mechanism that no longer holds the housing rigidly, often after the mirror has been knocked. The vibration blurs the view exactly when you most need it, so it is worth fixing rather than living with.
