What it does

The front bumper combines a visible outer cover with an energy-absorbing structure behind it, designed to absorb low-speed impact and protect the bodywork, radiator and sensors mounted in it.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Cracks, scuffs or a torn mounting tab
  • Bumper sitting misaligned with the wings
  • Parking sensors or camera reading incorrectly after a knock
  • Rattling at speed from a loose fixing

FAQ

Does the bumper cover actually protect anything?

The visible cover is mostly cosmetic and aerodynamic. The real protection is the reinforcement bar and absorber behind it — which is why a bumper can look intact after an impact while the structure behind it is deformed.

Do parking sensors need recalibrating after bumper work?

Sensors usually just need correct refitting, but cameras and radar units mounted in the bumper generally require recalibration. Skipping it leaves driver-assist systems reading the road from a slightly wrong angle.
