What it does
The oil filter traps metal particles, carbon and grit before the oil returns to the bearings. It contains a bypass valve so that if the element clogs, unfiltered oil still flows rather than starving the engine.
Signs it needs replacing
- Oil pressure lower than usual at idle
- Dark, gritty oil shortly after a change
- Ticking valvetrain noise on start-up
- Visible seepage around the filter seal

FAQ
Should the oil filter be changed with every oil change?
Yes, always. A used filter holds dirty oil and its element is already partly loaded, so reusing it contaminates fresh oil immediately and shortens its effective life.
Do more expensive filters make a difference?
The meaningful differences are media quality and a proper anti-drainback valve, which keeps oil in the filter at shutdown so pressure builds faster on start-up. That matters more on engines with variable valve timing.
