What it does
The gearbox multiplies engine torque through a set of ratios so the engine can stay in its usable rev range across the speed range. Automatic units add a hydraulic control system and a torque converter.

FAQ
How often should automatic transmission fluid be changed?
Commonly every 60,000–80,000 km, though many makers describe it as lifetime fill. Heat is what degrades it, so traffic, hills and towing all argue for changing it well before any lifetime claim.
Is slipping always a rebuild?
Not always. Low or degraded fluid, a failing solenoid or a worn torque converter can all cause slipping and are far cheaper to address. Diagnose before assuming the worst — but do not keep driving on it, as slipping generates heat that causes the real damage.
