What it does

Refrigerant is the working fluid that carries heat out of the cabin, cycling between liquid and gas as it absorbs and releases heat. It also carries the oil that lubricates the compressor.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Cooling that has gradually weakened over months
  • AC clutch cycling on and off rapidly
  • Frost forming on AC lines or fittings
  • Cooling that works at speed but not at idle

FAQ

Does AC refrigerant get used up?

No — it is a sealed system, so it is never consumed. If it is low, it has leaked. That is why simply refilling every summer is treating the symptom, and the leak will keep taking the oil with it.

Can you overfill an AC system?

Yes, and it is a common mistake with DIY top-up cans. Too much refrigerant raises system pressure, cools worse rather than better, and can damage the compressor. The system needs a measured charge by weight, not by feel.
