What it does
The AC compressor pressurises refrigerant and drives it around the system — it is the pump at the heart of the air conditioning. It is belt-driven and engages through an electromagnetic clutch.
Signs it needs replacing
- Air blowing warm with the AC switched on
- Grinding or squealing when the AC engages
- The clutch not audibly clicking in
- Refrigerant leaking around the shaft seal

FAQ
Why did my AC compressor fail?
Most commonly a slow refrigerant leak. Refrigerant carries the oil that lubricates the compressor, so a system left low runs the compressor dry — which is why topping up a leaking system repeatedly ends in compressor failure.
Do I need to replace anything else with the compressor?
Yes. If it failed internally, debris spreads through the system, so the receiver drier and expansion valve should be replaced and the lines flushed. Skipping that is the usual reason a new compressor fails again quickly.
