Why do several unrelated systems fail at once?
Almost always a shared ground point. Multiple circuits return through common grounding studs, so one corroded ground can produce a set of symptoms that look unrelated and sends people chasing individual components.
Can a damaged harness be repaired?
Usually yes. Localised damage is repaired by splicing in new wire with proper sealed joints. Full harness replacement is a major job reserved for extensive fire, flood or rodent damage.
