What it does

The alternator generates electricity while the engine runs, recharging the battery and powering everything from the ignition to the air conditioning. It is belt-driven and includes a voltage regulator to hold output steady.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Battery warning light on while driving
  • Headlights brightening and dimming with engine speed
  • A whining or growling noise from the belt area
  • Repeated flat batteries despite a new battery

FAQ

Is it the battery or the alternator?

If a jump start gets the car going but it dies again shortly after, the alternator is not recharging. If it starts and runs fine after a jump, the battery is more likely at fault. A charging-voltage test settles it in minutes.

How long can I drive with a failing alternator?

Only until the battery runs down — typically well under an hour, and less at night or with the AC on. Once voltage drops far enough the engine management stops functioning and the car will cut out.
