What it does

The ECU is the computer that reads the engine sensors and controls fuelling, ignition timing and emissions equipment. It adapts continuously, learning fuel trims and idle values to compensate for wear.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Multiple unrelated fault codes appearing at once
  • Engine running in limp mode with reduced power
  • Intermittent no-start with no mechanical cause
  • Erratic idle that does not track any single sensor

FAQ

Do ECUs actually fail often?

Rarely. Most faults blamed on the ECU turn out to be sensors, wiring or connectors. Water ingress, a jump start done in reverse polarity, or heat damage are the realistic ECU failure causes — assume wiring first.

Does a replacement ECU need programming?

Almost always. Modern units are matched to the vehicle immobiliser and specific configuration, so a unit from another car generally needs coding to the VIN and key before the engine will start.
