What it does
The key fob transmits a rolling encrypted code to the car to lock, unlock and in many cases authorise starting. It pairs with the immobiliser, so a replacement must be programmed to the specific vehicle.
Signs it needs replacing
- Reduced range, needing to stand closer
- Buttons responding intermittently or not at all
- Car not recognising the key for keyless start
- Warning message about key not detected

FAQ
Is it the battery or the fob?
Battery first — it is cheap and by far the most common cause of shrinking range. If a fresh battery does not restore it, suspect worn button contacts, a cracked circuit board from being dropped, or moisture damage.
Can a replacement key be programmed at any workshop?
It depends on the make. Many can be coded with standard diagnostic tools, but some manufacturers require dealer access to security codes. Having a spare programmed while you still have a working key is always cheaper than starting from none.
