What it does
The timing belt synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft so the valves open and close in step with the pistons. On an interference engine, a snapped belt lets valves and pistons collide, causing major internal damage.
Signs it needs replacing
- Ticking from the front of the engine
- Visible cracks, glazing or missing teeth on the belt
- Engine will not start and cranks unusually fast
- Oil contamination on the belt surface

FAQ
When should the timing belt be replaced?
Follow the manufacturer interval — commonly 60,000–100,000 km or five years, whichever comes first. Age matters as much as distance, because rubber hardens and cracks even on a car that is barely driven.
Should the water pump be replaced at the same time?
Usually yes, if the pump is driven by the timing belt. The labour to reach it is nearly identical, so replacing both together avoids paying for the same teardown twice.
