What it does

Engine mounts hold the engine to the chassis and absorb its vibration through rubber or fluid-filled bushings. As the rubber perishes, movement that should be damped transmits straight into the cabin.

Signs it needs replacing

  • A clunk when shifting between drive and reverse
  • Vibration through the seat and steering at idle
  • Engine visibly lurching when you blip the throttle
  • Cracked or collapsed rubber, or leaking fluid from a hydraulic mount

FAQ

Can I drive with a broken engine mount?

For a short while, but excess engine movement strains the exhaust, driveshafts and coolant hoses, and the remaining mounts then carry more load and fail sooner. It is a small job that gets expensive if ignored.

Do all mounts need replacing at once?

Not necessarily, but they age together. If one has failed at high mileage, inspect the rest — replacing a single mount alongside three tired ones often leaves the vibration unchanged.
