What it does
The head gasket seals the joint between the cylinder head and the engine block, containing combustion pressure while keeping coolant and oil in separate passages. When it fails, those three fluids start mixing.
Signs it needs replacing
- White sweet-smelling smoke from the exhaust
- Milky cream-coloured residue under the oil cap
- Coolant loss with no external leak
- Bubbles rising in the radiator with the engine running

FAQ
What causes a head gasket to fail?
Overheating is the dominant cause — the head expands beyond what the gasket can seal. That is why a coolant leak or dead thermostat left unattended so often turns into a far more expensive head gasket job.
Do sealant products actually work?
They can temporarily slow a very small breach, but they do not repair the gasket and can clog the radiator and heater core. Treat them as a way to reach a workshop, not as a repair.
