What it does
The oxygen sensor measures unburnt oxygen in the exhaust so the ECU can hold the air-fuel mixture at the ideal ratio. The upstream sensor controls fuelling; the downstream one monitors catalytic converter efficiency.

How long do oxygen sensors last?
Typically 100,000–150,000 km. They degrade gradually rather than failing outright, so fuel economy can drift worse for a long time before a fault code ever appears.
Which sensor do I replace — upstream or downstream?
The fault code usually identifies the bank and position. Upstream sensors control fuelling and cause economy and driveability symptoms; downstream sensors mainly monitor the catalytic converter, so their codes often point at the converter rather than the sensor.
