What it does
The crankshaft position sensor tells the ECU exactly where the crankshaft is and how fast it is turning, which is what the ignition and injection timing are calculated from. Without its signal, the engine cannot run.
Signs it needs replacing
- Engine cranks but will not start

FAQ
Why does it fail when hot but work when cold?
Heat increases resistance in a degrading sensor winding until the signal drops below what the ECU can read. That produces the classic pattern: the car cuts out when fully warmed, then starts again once it has cooled for twenty minutes.
Can the car run at all without this sensor?
No. It is one of the few sensors with no fallback — the ECU cannot calculate ignition timing without knowing crank position, so a complete failure means the engine will crank endlessly but never fire.
