What it does
The ABS sensor reads wheel rotation speed and feeds it to the ABS module, which uses it to detect lock-up and modulate brake pressure. The same signal usually feeds traction and stability control.
Signs it needs replacing
- ABS warning light illuminated
- Traction or stability control light on as well
- ABS activating on dry roads at low speed
- Speedometer reading erratically on some vehicles

FAQ
Do brakes still work with a failed ABS sensor?
Yes — normal braking is unaffected and fully functional. What you lose is the anti-lock function during hard or emergency braking, exactly when you need it most, so it should not be left indefinitely.
Is it always the sensor itself?
Often not. Metal debris stuck to the sensor tip, a damaged tone ring, or a corroded connector produce the same fault. Cleaning the sensor and inspecting the tone ring is worth doing before buying a part.
