What it does
The mass airflow sensor measures the weight of air entering the engine so the ECU can calculate the matching fuel quantity. It uses a heated element whose cooling rate indicates airflow.
Signs it needs replacing
- Hesitation or stalling under acceleration
- Rough idle, especially just after starting
- Poor fuel economy with no mechanical fault
- Check engine light with an airflow range code

FAQ
Can a MAF sensor be cleaned?
Yes, and it often works. Dust and oil coat the sensing element and slow its response. Use dedicated MAF cleaner and never touch the element — it is a fine wire or film that damage easily, and a scratched element is beyond cleaning.
Why did my MAF fail after fitting a performance air filter?
Over-oiled cotton filters shed oil that coats the sensing element and skews readings. It is a well-known cause of MAF faults after an air intake change — apply oil sparingly, or clean the sensor after fitting.
