What it does
The ignition coil steps battery voltage up to the tens of thousands of volts a spark plug needs. Most modern engines use a separate coil-on-plug unit per cylinder, so a failure shows up as one specific misfiring cylinder.

FAQ
Can a bad spark plug damage the ignition coil?
Yes. A worn plug with a wide gap forces the coil to generate higher voltage to bridge it, which stresses the windings and is a common cause of premature coil failure. Replace plugs on schedule to protect the coils.
If one coil fails, should I replace them all?
Not necessarily, but if the car has high mileage and the original coils, the others are the same age under the same heat. Many owners replace the failed one and keep a spare rather than doing a full set.
