What it does
The throttle body regulates how much air enters the engine via a butterfly valve, either cable-operated or electronically controlled. Carbon builds up around the valve edge and disrupts airflow at small openings.
Signs it needs replacing
- Unstable or hunting idle
- Stalling when coming to a stop
- Throttle response that feels delayed or sticky
- Check engine light with an air-metering fault code

FAQ
Does cleaning the throttle body help?
Often significantly, especially for hunting idle. Carbon deposits around the valve edge change the tiny airflow at closed throttle, which the ECU cannot fully compensate for. Cleaning is inexpensive and frequently resolves it.
Why does idle get worse after cleaning?
On electronic throttle bodies, the ECU has learned to compensate for the deposits. Once removed, its learned values are wrong until it relearns — which needs an idle relearn procedure or simply some drive time.
