What it does

The catalytic converter uses precious-metal catalysts to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones. It only works at high temperature, and it is damaged by whatever the engine sends downstream.

Signs it needs replacing

  • Rattling from underneath the car
  • Sulphur or rotten-egg smell from the exhaust
  • Noticeable loss of power and sluggish acceleration
  • Check engine light with a catalyst efficiency code

FAQ

What kills a catalytic converter?

Rarely age alone. Unburnt fuel from misfires, oil or coolant entering the exhaust from internal engine wear, or physical impact are the usual causes. Fixing the underlying fault first matters, or the new converter will fail the same way.

Can I drive with a blocked converter?

It will run, but a blocked converter creates exhaust back-pressure that chokes the engine, costs power and fuel, and can overheat exhaust valves. Prolonged driving on a severely blocked converter risks genuine engine damage.
