Refrigerant Is a Sealed System, Not a Consumable
Refrigerant in your AC is sealed in a closed loop. It does not get used up. If it drops, there is a leak. Topping it up without fixing the leak is wasting money and risking your compressor. A refrigerant leak is serious because refrigerant carries oil that lubricates the compressor. Each time refrigerant escapes, compressor oil goes with it. Low refrigerant starves the compressor of lubrication, causing failure. Replacing a compressor is one of the most expensive repairs on the car, and far costlier than fixing the leak that killed it. If your AC has lost refrigerant, have it pressure tested to confirm a leak before refilling.
Blocked Cabin Air Filter Is the Most Common Fix
The cabin air filter stops dust and pollen from entering the interior. In dusty climates like Jordan, it clogs quickly. A blocked filter stops airflow through the evaporator, so the AC runs but blows warm air. You may also smell musty or stale air.
Check and replace your cabin filter every 6-12 months depending on conditions. Replacement is inexpensive and takes about fifteen minutes. If your AC is warm and the filter is dirty, this is the first thing to fix.
Condenser Packed with Dust Blocks Airflow
The AC condenser at the front of your car releases heat from the refrigerant. Dust, insects, and mud clogging it prevents airflow and cooling. AC works on the highway but fails at idle when the condenser relies on an electric fan. Look through the front grille. If you see heavy dust or debris, the condenser needs cleaning. Rinse gently with a hose. If severely corroded, replacement is needed.
Cooling Fan Not Running at Idle
An electric fan helps the condenser shed heat. If AC works at highway speed but fails in traffic, the fan may not be engaging. At speed, airflow cools the condenser. At idle, only the fan works. Compressor Clutch and Refrigerant Pressure
The AC compressor uses an electromagnetic clutch that engages when AC turns on. You should hear a click or engine sound change. If the compressor never engages, the AC will not cool. Blocked Evaporator Drain Causes Water and Mold
The evaporator coil removes moisture from cabin air through a drain tube under the car. If clogged, water backs up into the cabin causing musty smells or wet carpet. Mold grows inside the evaporator reducing cooling. A workshop can clear the drain with compressed air or flushing. To prevent this, open windows before turning off the engine to let the evaporator dry.
Why Overfilling Refrigerant Makes Cooling Worse
Too much refrigerant is as bad as too little. Overfilling raises system pressure, forcing the compressor to work harder and preventing proper refrigerant expansion. The result is warm air despite high pressure. Insist your workshop find and fix the leak before refilling. Cheap shops that just pump refrigerant year after year without testing waste money and damage the compressor.
