Tyres are the only part of your car that touches the road. Every braking, steering and acceleration force passes through four contact patches roughly the size of your hand each. Almost everything that makes them safe or unsafe comes down to three things you can check yourself: pressure, age and wear pattern.
Why pressure matters more than people think
Tyre pressure affects braking distance, fuel consumption, wear rate and the risk of a blowout. It is the single cheapest safety check on the car and the one most often skipped.
Under-inflation is the dangerous direction. A soft tyre flexes more in the sidewall as it rolls, and that flexing generates heat. Heat is what destroys tyre structure, which is why under-inflation is the main cause of high-speed blowouts in hot weather. On a long summer drive down to Aqaba, an under-inflated tyre is working hard and getting hotter the whole way.
Over-inflation is less dramatic but not harmless: a rock-hard tyre rides on the centre of its tread, reducing the contact patch, lengthening braking distances and wearing out the middle of the tyre early.
Where to find the right pressure, and how to check it
Use the figure on the sticker in the driver's door jamb, or in the owner's manual. Do not use the number moulded into the tyre sidewall — that is the tyre's maximum safe pressure, not the pressure your car was designed for. Confusing the two is a common mistake and leaves the car badly over-inflated.
Check pressures cold, meaning before driving or after the car has been parked for a few hours. Driving warms the air inside the tyre and raises the reading, so a pressure set while hot will be too low once the tyre cools.
Check monthly. Tyres lose air slowly on their own, and pressure also falls as ambient temperature drops, so a tyre set correctly in summer can be noticeably low by winter. Check the spare at the same time — the one moment you need it is the worst moment to discover it is flat.
Reading the DOT code: tyres age out, even unused
Rubber hardens and cracks with age regardless of how much tread is left. A tyre with deep tread can still be unsafe if it is old, because hardened rubber grips far less, especially in the wet.
The age is stamped on the sidewall. Find the DOT code and read the last four digits: the first two are the week, the last two are the year. So 2325 means the twenty-third week of 2025.
Six years is a widely used guideline for reassessment and ten years is a firm limit, after which a tyre should be replaced whatever it looks like. Sustained heat and strong sunlight accelerate this, so a car parked outdoors year-round in Jordan ages its tyres faster than the same car in a garage. This matters most for a spare, which can sit untouched for a decade.
Tread depth and the legal minimum
The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, measured in the main grooves. Most tyres carry moulded wear indicators in the grooves — when the tread is level with those bars, the tyre is at the limit.
Treat 1.6 mm as the point at which a tyre is finished, not the point at which it is still fine. Tread exists to channel water out from under the tyre, and that ability falls off well before the legal minimum. Wet braking distances lengthen noticeably on a tyre in the last couple of millimetres, which is exactly when Jordan's first winter rain arrives on roads carrying months of accumulated oil and dust.
What uneven wear is telling you
A tyre wears evenly when pressure, alignment and suspension are all correct. When it does not, the pattern identifies the cause.
Wear concentrated in the centre of the tread means sustained over-inflation. Wear on both outer shoulders with a good centre means under-inflation. Wear on one shoulder only points to alignment — camber or toe out of specification — not to pressure. Scalloped or cupped patches spaced around the tyre usually mean worn shock absorbers or struts letting the wheel bounce rather than staying planted.
The pattern is diagnostic, so read it before fitting new tyres. Replacing tyres without correcting the alignment or suspension that destroyed them simply means the new set wears out the same way.
Why electric cars go through tyres faster
Electric cars are heavier than equivalent petrol models because of the battery pack, and they deliver maximum torque instantly from a standstill. More weight and more torque both push wear rates up, so an EV owner should expect to replace tyres sooner than they would on a comparable petrol car.
This applies across the range now common in Jordan, from the BYD Atto 3 and Dolphin to the VW ID.4 and Tesla Model 3. It is a normal cost of EV ownership rather than a fault, and it is partly offset by brake pads lasting far longer thanks to regenerative braking. Keeping pressures correct is the most effective thing you can do to limit it.
Rotation and replacing in pairs
Tyres on different corners wear at different rates — front tyres on a front-wheel-drive car handle steering and most of the braking, so they wear faster. Rotating them at the interval in your manual evens this out and gets more life from the set.
When replacing only two tyres, fit the new pair on the rear axle. It is counterintuitive on a front-wheel-drive car, but worn rear tyres lose grip first in the wet and cause the back of the car to slide, which is much harder to correct than understeer at the front.
