Electric vehicles transform the maintenance equation. The entire combustion engine service list—engine oil, spark plugs, timing belts, exhaust systems—disappears. This cuts service cost and complexity dramatically. But owners who skip maintenance on unneeded items often ignore the things that do matter, assuming EVs are care-free. They aren't—just different.
Tyres Wear Faster Than Petrol Cars
Instant electric torque from standstill loads tyres hard from the first meter. Battery weight—often 500–800 kg more than a combustion equivalent—presses down constantly. The result: tyre tread wears noticeably faster than on comparable petrol vehicles.
Check tyre pressure monthly. Cold-weather pressure loss is more dramatic in EVs because the heavier vehicle amplifies any pressure drop. Rotate tyres every 8,000 km rather than 10,000 km. Consider tyre wear as a maintenance cost you will face sooner, and budget accordingly.
The Brake Paradox: Longer Life, Surface Rust Risk
Regenerative braking does most of the deceleration. Friction brakes engage mainly for emergencies and final stops. Brake pads and discs last dramatically longer—often 200,000 km or more, compared to 100,000 km on a petrol car.
But underuse creates a hidden problem: brake discs surface-rust from moisture exposure.
