The Color Code: Red, Amber, Green, and Blue Warnings
Dashboard warning lights use colors to communicate urgency. A red light signals an immediate safety or mechanical problem requiring you to stop safely and investigate. Never ignore a red light. Amber (yellow or orange) means a fault has appeared but the car is still drivable. Investigate soon, ideally within a day or two. Green and blue lights are informational only—they indicate a system is active or a feature is enabled, no action needed.
Some red lights demand you stop immediately on the roadside. Others allow you to finish your current journey safely before investigating. The difference is whether the fault affects braking, stability, or engine survival. If a red light appears, pull over, check the dashboard for details, and if a second light appears, stop driving immediately. Red Lights: Stop Safely and Investigate Immediately
Oil pressure warning light (usually an oil can or 'OIL'): This is one of the most dangerous lights to ignore. A red oil pressure light means the engine oil pressure has dropped critically. Driving further risks catastrophic engine damage within minutes. Stop immediately, turn off the engine, and check the oil level with the dipstick. Low oil destroys engine bearings. Never assume low oil light is the same as low oil level—the light indicates pressure, not volume, so even a small leak or a failing pump can trigger it. Coolant temperature warning light (usually a thermometer in a circle): A red temperature light means the engine is overheating. Driving further causes head gasket failure and warped cylinder heads—expensive, catastrophic damage. Stop immediately, turn off the engine, wait 15 minutes for it to cool, and check the coolant level. Never open a hot radiator cap; you will be severely burned. Brake and Battery Warnings: Safety Critical
Brake warning light (usually a circle with exclamation mark or 'BRAKE'): A red brake light can mean several things: brake fluid is low (a leak in the system), brake pads are worn thin (friction material depleted), or the ABS or brake assist system has failed. Test your brakes gently—if they feel soft, spongy, or unresponsive, stop immediately and do not drive. Brake fluid is usually easy to top up if the level is low. Battery and charging light (usually a battery symbol or '+' and '−'): An amber battery light means the alternator is not charging the battery properly. A steady check engine light often points to a faulty oxygen sensor, loose gas cap, or pending emission code. ABS, Airbag, and Power Steering: Systems You Cannot Lose
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) warning light (usually 'ABS' or a skidding car): Amber ABS light means the anti-lock function is disabled, but regular brakes still work. Brake normally; avoid heavy braking in wet or low-grip conditions until the fault is repaired. A red ABS light (rare) usually indicates a hydraulic fault, and braking may be compromised. Airbag/SRS warning light (usually a silhouette of a person with a deployed bag): Any airbag warning light—red or amber—means the airbag system has a fault. Do not ignore it. But a red high-voltage battery warning or 'Reduced Power' light means the battery or power electronics have a fault. A red EV warning light is a red-light situation if it appears while driving.
