This sound stops when you press the brake pedal harder because the extra pressure temporarily seats the wear indicator. The purpose of this squealing indicator is to alert you before damage occurs. Replacing pads at this stage costs far less than repairing a damaged rotor, so heed the sound. Grinding Noise When Braking: Metal on Metal—Stop Immediately

Most mechanics recommend replacing a wheel bearing within a few weeks of hearing this noise. It is a straightforward service on most vehicles. If the noise is accompanied by a steering wheel vibration that pulses rhythmically with the rotation of the wheel, the bearing is likely advanced in wear and should be addressed soon.
Clicking Sound When Turning at Low Speed
A rhythmic clicking or popping noise that occurs only when you turn the steering wheel, especially at low speeds or while parking, is characteristic of a worn CV joint (constant-velocity joint). CV joints connect the transmission to the front wheels and must transmit power while allowing the wheels to turn and move up and down. The joint includes a ball bearing assembly that, when worn, clicks as the balls rattle slightly inside their races. The noise is loudest during tight turns because the CV joint reaches its maximum angle of articulation, and any wear becomes audible.
A worn CV joint is not immediately dangerous, but it will worsen. If a CV joint fails completely, you will lose power to that wheel, and the vehicle will be very difficult to control. Most mechanics recommend replacing a CV joint axle (the most cost-effective repair) within a few weeks of the clicking beginning. If you ignore the sound and the joint deteriorates further, you risk being stranded or losing control during acceleration through a turn. On the other hand, if the noise is very occasional and mild, the joint may have months of life left, though it will eventually need replacement.
Knocking or Clunking Over Bumps and Dips
A sharp knocking or clunking sound that occurs when driving over bumps, potholes, or dips in the road indicates wear in the suspension system—typically in bushings, ball joints, or suspension links. These components connect the wheel to the frame and allow up-and-down movement while keeping the wheel aligned. When a bushing (a rubber or polyurethane component) or ball joint (a ball bearing connection) wears, it develops play—small amounts of movement it should not have. As the wheel moves over bumps, these loose components knock against each other or against their mounting points.
The urgency depends on the severity of the wear. A subtle knock over large bumps might indicate early wear that can wait a few weeks for inspection. A loud clunk over every small bump suggests advanced wear that should be addressed soon—the component could fail without warning, causing a loss of suspension support and a dangerous control situation. Some suspension components are critical for steering control and brake function, so any progressive worsening of the noise warrants a prompt suspension inspection. Squeal on Cold Start That Fades After Seconds or Minutes
A high-pitched squealing noise when you start a cold engine that diminishes and disappears as the engine warms up is typically an accessory belt making contact with a pulley before it has warmed to full operation. The alternator, power steering pump, and air-conditioning compressor are all driven by a rubber belt that runs around multiple pulleys. When the engine is cold, the belt is stiffer and the pulleys are tight, so there is some slippage and noise. As the belt warms and the engine reaches operating temperature, the noise typically vanishes.
This noise is rarely a sign of imminent failure, but it indicates that the belt is aging or may have glazed (polished) surfaces that reduce grip. If the squeal persists even after the engine is fully warm, or if it becomes louder or more frequent over time, the belt should be inspected for cracks or fraying and possibly replaced. A preventive belt replacement every 50,000 to 100,000 kilometres, depending on the vehicle, is common practice to avoid an unexpected breakage that leaves you stranded. A breaking accessory belt will cause the alternator to stop charging the battery, the power steering to fail, and the air conditioning to stop working.
Ticking or Knocking from the Top of the Engine
A rapid ticking or irregular knocking sound coming from under the valve cover (the top of the engine) that increases in frequency as the engine accelerates can indicate several issues: the valve clearances may be worn and need adjustment, the timing chain or belt may be loose or wearing, or oil pressure may be low. In older engines with overhead valves or cam-in-block designs, a mechanical valve train that is worn or out of adjustment can produce a lifter tick—a noise that sounds like a ballpoint pen clicking rapidly. Modern engines with overhead cams may make a ticking noise if the cam timing is off, though this is rare.
A persistent ticking warrants attention from a mechanic who can listen to the sound and often diagnose the cause within minutes. If the ticking is accompanied by an oil pressure warning light on the dashboard, the issue is likely low oil pressure—check your oil level immediately and top it up if needed. Low oil pressure means the engine is not being lubricated properly and can lead to catastrophic bearing damage within hours of continuous driving. Do not ignore an oil pressure light or severe ticking accompanied by it.
Rattling on Cold Start That Quietens After a Few Seconds
A rattling, grinding, or metallic noise when you first start the engine in the morning or after the engine has sat cold, which quietens after 10–30 seconds as the engine warms, is often caused by the timing chain tensioner. In engines with timing chains (instead of belts), a spring-loaded tensioner keeps the chain tight and prevents rattle. When the engine is cold, oil viscosity is higher and pressure is lower, so the tensioner may not maintain full tension, causing the chain to rattle slightly against the guides. As oil circulates and warms, pressure rises and tension increases, the noise stops.
This noise is a normal characteristic of some engines with timing chains, especially older designs or when cold-weather driving is common. However, if the rattle persists and does not diminish within 10 seconds, or if it becomes louder or occurs even when the engine is warm, the timing chain tensioner may be failing. A failing tensioner can allow excessive chain slack, which can cause the timing to slip, misfires, and potentially severe engine damage.
